Hi I'm looking to run 4 VM's for basic spreadsheets and web browsing
possibly some video slots. What's the minimum spec I would need in terms of

RAM
Processor generation
Processor architecture

Do I need a Dual or Quad core processor?

Thanks in advance.

I was hoping for under £1000 don't mind recon or grade A used.
Is a quad essential?

Not too many machines with 32gb standard and upgrading from 16gb looks to be over £200

If I wasn't to run simultainously would I get away with 16gb.

Thanks for your answer

For the RAM, each VM, and the host, needs its own chunk of RAM. Devote 4GB to each, and 16GB goes away rather quickly.

All depends on exactly what OS and applications are running.
Here is my 32GB system, running simultaneous 4VM's.

Win 10 Pro, Server2016, Linux Mint, Ubuntu, and the host Win 10 Pro.
Out of 32GB, 10GB spare.

And yes, you need a good CPU. Mine is an i7-4790k.

I'm not much on specific laptop models. 1,000 quid might be tough.
But look around, see what you can find in your market and budget.

Then we can pick them apart...:)
