Laptop fan only works when I manually spin it

My laptop fan is no longer starting when I turn on my computer. I cleaned it and this helped for a week or two, but now it will just jerk a little upon startup and never actually spin. However, if I manually start it, the fan will start and spin without any problems. Would getting a new fan solve the problem? Or is the fan simply not getting enough power? I don't want to buy a replacement fan yet since it seems like the fan runs just fine, I just can't get it to start without a manual push.

The laptop is an MSI GT70 Dragon edition. Intel i7, 8GB RAM, GTX 870M, if that matters at all.
Thanks in advance.

It sounds like you do need to replace the fan. If it was just a power issue, it wouldn't spin at all even after you start it. Better to replace it now than to have the laptop overheat due to not having it. Which would lead to frying of other components and possibly killing the laptop.

I get the not wanting to replace it if you don't have to, but in this instance, you should replace it.

Sounds like the fan bearing might just be starting to go bad, hence the needed push to start it going. I'd replace it ASAP, as the GT70 series tends to run a bit warm anyway due to a less than optimal cooling solution (IMHO). The fan is probably pretty inexpensive, and quite easy to replace on the GT70, compared to many other laptops.
