Solution
There are 2 ways to connect this gear.
1. Connect the ATT box to the receiver with HDMI
Connect the receiver HDMI out to the TV to the HDMI-ARC input on the TV.
2. Connect the ATT box to the TV with HDMI
Connect the TV to the receiver with either HDMI-ARC or optical audio output. If you use the optical out you will still need to connect the HDMI out of the receiver to an input on the TV to get the onscreen display visible for set up of the receiver.
Either way you have to set the TV to either output via HDMI-ARC or optical audio out in the TV menu and then set up the receiver so it recognized that that connection is assigned to an input. The owners manuals are usually confusing but the info is usually there somewhere.
