I recently moved. At the old place, I had my home built HTPC connected to my 42 inch LG smart TV with no issues. The PC would recognize it was an LG TV. I just set everything up at the new place, and now it will not recognize the TV. I get a picture, but only at 1024x728. Will not play sound either. I uninstalled and reinstalled the graphics driver, and got it to do 1920x1080, but still no sound. I tried to play around with the setting for audio, and its back to the 1024x728. Not sure where to go from here. Could it be the cable. It is an HDMI to mini-HDMI. Do not have a spare cable to test.

Solution

if you are just using it as a monitor then your PC shouldn't have to recognize what TV it is just that something is connected by HDMI...

"could it be the cable" you asked. well, yes it could! during the moving process, it could have been damaged in some way. it's not common for an HDMI to only stop transmitting audio but that does not mean it is impossible.

If nothing else it could be a setting in your computer.

When I first set up a television as a third monitor (also using a HDMI to mini-HDMI adapter), I have to go into NVIDIA Control Panel and then under Display, Set Up Digital Audio. I don't know why the move would require you to have to do this again, but perhaps because the TV was disconnected and powered off during the move.

And NVIDIA Control Panel also recognizes the tv as "LG Electronics LG TV".

The PC is recognizing the TV as "Generic Non PNP Monitor". It used to recognize as "LG Electronics LG TV". In the display setting, I only get two resolution settings. 1024x728 and a lower setting. I've gone through the nVidia control panel, and it is the same there as well. I went and got a different cable, and still the same. I moved the video card to a different slot, and still the same.

It was something that I noticed was different. Thought it might help with figuring out a solution. Like a said I get a picture, but only at 1024x728 or lower. The computer used to recognize as "LG Electronics LG TV".

Now I'm not getting any picture to the TV from the computer. I've tested the computer by hooking it up to my monitor, and it works fine. All of the HDMI ports on the TV works with the cable box and DVD player.

Update: I'm still not getting this to work. I have tried three different computers, and two different cables. One of the computers is a laptop. I've narrowed it down to the issue being the TV, but the HDMI ports on the tv do work with the cable box, and dvd player without an issue.
