I've been wanting to get into PC gaming for a while but I'm not a huge fan of desktops, or the idea of building them. So i've been looking into some gtx 1050 ti laptops. Would I be able to do some serious gaming on one of those? I'll probably be playing some overwatch, older AAA titles and maybe Destiny 2 if the port is good. Would that be possible? I'll mostly be gaming at home and using the laptop for work at school.

Yes you will be able to fine. Just dont expect the highest settings in all games, make sure you have a good processor as well.

It's possible but it depends what you mean by serious and how much the eye candy matters to you. A 1050ti will run most games at up to 1920 x 1080 resolutions at medium or high settings and manage good framerates. But on more demanding titles you may have to compromise on visual quality a bit.
Another issue with laptops is the CPU, many are only dual cores with hyper threading despite an i5 or i7 name so are more like a desktop i3. A genuine Quad core with decent clock speeds can really help in some games.
There's always a trade off or compromise to be made. Desktops are more flexible and upgrade-able and cost less for better gaming performance. On the other hand laptops are portable and come all set up and ready to go. By the time you add a keyboard, mouse, and screen for decent gaming experience you might as well be using a desktop. Gaming on a laptop keyboard and screen is something I'd only do when travelling, it's really not the same.
Don't let me put you off though, you can certainly enjoy gaming on a laptop if you choose carefully. I'm just biased as a long time desktop gamer.
