do i need to keep my laptop plunged in, and will the battery over charge if i do this?

Your battery will not over charge by having it plugged in while using it, nor will it over charge if you leave it plugged in when NOT using it. But best practice is when you are not using it and it is fully charged, unplug it. It is also a good idea to run your battery down to maybe 5-10% occasionally, then fully re-charge, as it will prolong the life of the cells.
