I have 5.1 home theatre system with active sub-woofer and a Sony STR DE585 surround receiver. The sound source is cable TV which emits stereo sound only and the TV itself has DTS 5.1 surround system. I think that DTS is useless if your source is only stereo.
Therefore, my question: Is there a way I can listen to 5.1 system, amplified by receiver, even though the sound that comes from the TV is stereo? It doesn't have to be true 5.1, it can be stereo but I need all the speakers to be working. Like a pseudo 5.1?

Comments are appreciated!

Yes, if you press the MENU button on the remote and go to SURR, then look for the setting you would need which is the '5 CHANNEL STEREO' mode. (or similar) That mode will then output stereo over all 5 5 speakers (ie left down the left hand side, and right down the right hand side) This is a mode i use on my ONKYO receiver most of the time, unless i am watching a movie or something that is encoded with 5.1 surround sound.

Hope this helps you.

Only problem is, the OP's sound source is only being outputted in stereo, and they wanted stereo across all speakers. Hence my choice of direction with this. If however the cable box DOES have a digital output, then yes, use that and gain a better output source.

Yes, i have only had the Onkyo a short while, but out of the three other brands i have had before, this one is a diamond mate! More people should be buying these. Great prices at the moment too!

Just read the manual and found the answer. Just like you explained. It can be played on all 6 speakers but as pseudo, not real 5.1.
