Chromecast stick won't work since it's designed to connect to the HDMI input of a TV. No HDMI input on your laptop.
You should be able to use an HDMI to VGA + audio converter

to connect the stick to your projector and stream from your tablet or laptop to it directly. You will need a 5v USB power supply to run it.
