Hi,
I own a pair of ath m50x's and they have some wear-and-tear (ear parts keep coming undone and the wire in the headphones is stripped) and I'm looking to get a new pair, my budget is $200 and so far I've come accross these headphones: akg 7xx, Beyerdynamic DT 880, or get another pair of m50x's but I kinda want a new headset, I have a schiit fulla 2 amp/dac. What's you opinion? Does anyone have experience with the DT 880s?

Solution
i generally end up recommending the magni2 as it is known to work with just about any headphone you can throw at it but i did read someone claiming a fulla 2 would work with the dt990.

give it a try is all i can say.

depends on your preferences.

if you like the overall signature of the m50, moving into a dt770 is a slight step up. same general signature but just a tad more quality, bigger soundstage, better comfort. the 880 will have more soundstage but be a bit more neutral as it doesnt quite have the heavier treble/bass of the other models from beyer. the 990 will have more soundstage but less bass than the 770 though for open cans they do have good bass levels. of them all, the 770 is the most v-shaped in signature while the 990 is a bit less so.

want open? get the 990. want closed? get the 770.

if you're looking to branch out to a different type of signature, you will have to explain what you like and dont like.

sennheisers hd6xx are a good deal if you can catch it on massdrop but compared with beyer or audiotechnica cans they will sound a bit slow (they are great for long sessions and easy listening without fatigue though).

the akg k7xx is also a good massdrop deal. akg cans tend to favor treble a bit more than bass and tend to be fairly articulate. this means bad sources sound horrible and good sources sound excellent.

none of them are bad choices but it really depends on your needs and what you like the headphones to sound like. ideally listening to some in person would be the best. local hifi headphone shops might be an option

I've never had open back headphones before so I think I'll get my first pair! 990s it is, I don't want to deal with multiple month shipping from mass drop... I'm worried about my amp/dac, do you think a schiit fulla 2 will be able to drive those headphones? They claim to be 250 ohm and I know nothing a about that. Thanks for the detailed response!
