Pretty much any switch should work. I will guess that a $10 switch might be passive which would never work.
Monoprice isn't expensive. The HDMI cable will also affect whether the connection works or not. A more expensive cable doesn't give you a better result but it usually works more often since it meets HDMI specs which a lot of cable don't.
