I have an old Bose surround sound system with 8 speakers and a base unit that I want to connect to a new Samsung Smart HDMI TV. Surround sound wires are currently connected thru an older receiver with no HDMI port. Please advise what I need?
If your receiver has an optical digital input then that is what you need to use. Check the manual for the TV and receiver on how to activate the output on the TV and set the optical input on the receiver.
If your receiver doesn't have any digital inputs then you will need an optical to analog converter like this one. https/www.parts-express.com/parts-express-dac-digital-to-analog-converter-(51-compatible)--180-999
If the TV has a headphone output you can use that instead of the converter.

Thanks Grandmaster, The receiver does not have any digital inputs and the Bose surround system has 9 speakers (18 wires) the digital to analog converter you mentioned only has 2 sockets, think I need 18...
The DAC converts the digital out of the TV to an analog input for the receiver. The speakers connect to that receiver not to the DAC. Getting a receiver with a digital input will provide digital surround sound which your old one won't.
