I currently have a Canon Rebel t3i and I my high schools theatre photographer and I am the photographer for my friends band and the camera is great however I could use something better. What do you suggest so that I can get clean shots of musicals, plays, and gigs indoors and outdoors? My budget is around $1,000

Does the $1,000 budget include lenses? If you already have Canon lenses then it would save you some money to go with another Canon. Nikon is a good choice if you are not stuck on Canon and don't have a lot invested in Canon lenses. A good quality lens or lenses are really what makes the biggest difference.
