hello!

ok so my aunt had a old laptop she gave me, its a hp pavilion dv7-1240us which is running win 10 now but i have a newer laptop but it is very weak, it is a asus transformer t100, i was wondering which one would be better as a laptop to play some less intensive games like fist full of frags, half life 2, civ 5 and world of tank. Thank you!

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01631355: the "old" HP laptop has an AMD Turion X2 processor in it.

https://www.asus.com/us/2-in-1-PCs/ASUS_Transformer_Book_T100TA/specifications/: your "newer" ASUS has an Intel Atom processor (Z3740 or Z3775) in it.

I know Intel chips can be a little more power efficient than AMD chips, but the very low power (2-2.2W TDP) for the Atom chip (compared to 35W for the Turion), & the much lower clock speeds on the Atom chips, explains why the old HP is outperforming your ASUS.

I'd say the HP is better for gaming. The ASUS is a tablet for all intents and purposes and not really meant for gaming outside things like Bejeweled or the million variants of it out there.

However, I would recommend a fresh Windows install and upgrade the RAM to the max of 8gb. Another noticeable upgrade would be a 7200rpm HDD or a cheap SSD. It came with a 5400rpm HDD and that will dog it pretty bad.

The only other thing you could do is what I did with my Dell Inspiron 1720 from 2008 and that is to research the motherboard and CPU options that were available at the time and see if there is a CPU upgrade. I was able to max mine out and it was a noticeable difference. However, not all laptop CPU's can be upgraded and though I see that ones CPU on eBay, there is no guarantee that it's not soldered to the motherboard until you open it up and look to see if it is in a socket.

hey i deiced to do a 'benchmark' if you can calll it that, i ran world of tanks on both the hp and the asus. the asus on min settings 768p was 27-30 fps and the hp on 900p min settings it got 18 - 25 fps. yes i know the screen restitution but i checked it was the same if i put the dell on 768p
