I have a Magnavox smart t.v. The satellite is connected to the t.v. with a coax cable and that works properly with the t.v. input mode on "TV".

Here is the problem: I have older components which all have RCA connectors, but the back of the t.v. has the green/blue connections. I bought a converter for RCA to HDMI. I get picture, but no sound on the HDMI input. When I plug the component red/white plugs directly into the back of the t.v. then I get sound, but no picture. I tried plugging the yellow plug into the green RGA on the back of the t.v. but then I get nothing from the component as this conflicts with the coax input. What do I need to do to fix this?

Solution
Sometimes the power supply for the converter is bad. If you have a VOM you can check it. Sounds like it's defective. Send it back.
If you can upgrade your sat box do so. The improvement in picture quality will be worth it.
OK. I will use the exact technical terms so there is no ambiguity.

Both pieces have a COMPONENT connection, this a 5 RCA cables connection, 3 for video, 2 for audio, and is your next choice when HDMI is not available on both pieces. A direct connection is preferable over using any kind of converter.

So very simple:

FOR VIDEO: The COMPONENT video connectors are marked, Y, PB, PR, find those on both piece and connect Y-Y, PB-PB, PR-PR.

FOR AUDIO: Sony (LINE OUT R-L) to Magnavox (L-AUDIO-R), the white/red jack right on top of the video jacks you used above.

So you don't get confused if precise color coded cables are not available, the colors of the RCA cables really doesn't matter, use ANY RCA cables available to you. Just follow instruction above.

Yes, but when I put the TV on "TV" mode, it is picking up the satellite picture from the coax cable. The mode choices are:
TV
HDMI1
HDMI2
HDMI3
PC
USB

So what do you put the TV mode on to see the DVD player?

Well when I hit my remote SOURCE button, it does this:

If yours doesn't I don't know what to tell you. There is a slim possibility that if doesn't show unless you hook up something with a signal, so hookup DVD, fire it up and try again. After that, you need somebody to make a house call.

Also notice my COMPONENT doesn't yet have a label, maybe you have to label yours before you can use it, am really firing wild shots here.

Best of luck.

If your sat box is connected to the antenna input of your HDTV and it's an HD sat box you are not getting HD. It should be connected with an HDMI cable to one of the HDMI inputs.
Many TVs have a shared component - composite video input. The TV manual will explain which of the RGB RCA connectors should be used for composite video and how to change the input to composite. You also need to connect the audio cables to get sound. If you need more than one then an input selector would be needed.
To convert RCA analog audio+video to HDMI digital audio+video requires an active converter not just a passive cable.

It is not an HD satellite box, it is standard digital, and there is no HDMI output from the box. We have had it for a number of years now.

Isn't this supposed to convert the video and sound to HDMI?

I tried unplugging the coax cable and hooking the satellite box up to this converter with the red/white/yellow cord and plugged into the HDMI and have the same issue, video only, no sound.

If this converter is not correct, then please direct me to the type that will. Or perhaps it is supposed to work but is defective, in which case I need to send it back.
