I have an old Inspiron 6000 using IDE drives that are no longer available along with cosmetic issues (cracks and discoloration) which means I can't use it or resell it. I've taken the HDD, battery and ram. There is a square thing covered with a protective wrap labeled MODEM with instructions not to remove the cover.

I'm probably going to open up the laptop later when I have time, so I'm just wondering if there's anything I can salvage or anything I should keep before I'm done with it and throw it away.

Solution
Nothing is really worth salvaging from a 2005 laptop. Even if it was fully functional it would have some problems surfing the web because it has a slow single core CPU and there is a lot of code behind modern web pages that needs a lot of processing. It's not even good enough to watch Youtube videos.
