Hi guys, hope I'm using the right forum here.

I have a several years old HP laptop, barely used, and several keys have stopped working--they're kind of in a cluster (esc, e, q, a, z). I haven't spilled anything on it. I have done the take battery out thing, and uninstalling/reinstalling the driver. No go. And yes, an external keyboard works with those keys.

So am I just dealing with a dying keyboard? Thanks for the help :)

Solution
Try this...

1. Uninstall the keyboard driver.
2. Reboot the computer (without reinstalling the driver).
3. When it restarts, it should reinstall the driver on its own.

If this doesn't work, you may wish to try connecting an external keyboard and see if it works fine. If it does, then it could be the keys themselves that are the issue.

If this doesn't help, you may also want to try updating the synaptics driver.
