Notebook only charges in very specific positions

I have a few years old' ASUS laptop which lately began acting weird - namely, the charger started to charge it only occassionally and in some specific positions. When you plug the cable in, you have to literally move it around a milimeter at a time until you find the sweet spot and then god forbid you touch it or it'll stop charging. Most often it just constantly goes from charging to not charging, every second or two.

I suspected the charger to be the issue but I tried a different one and the same thing happened. Also, I tried turning it on without the battery and the problem persisted - as long as you found the sweet spot and were absolutely still so as not to move the cord for a nanometer, the laptop was working but the slightest, gentlest tap on the plug and it went blank.

Is it then safe to assume there's something wrong with the charger socket? It looks fine from the outside... Can I do anything about it myself?

Solution
Yes the socket is probably lifted off the motherboard and the solder is broken and by wiggling it, you get it to connect. It probably needs to be taken apart and resoldered.
