Try to program a rca universal remote to a sony home theatre system modle number hbd-dz170 i have tried all of the codes that come with the remote and can get it to fast forward and play the movies but cant get the remote to change the function of the receiver or the volume up and down on the receiver either can anyone help

There is no way to alter what codes the RCA remote has in it.
You will need something better such as one of the Logitech Harmony remotes. It is programmed online and they have an immense database of codes. They also allow your remote to learn commands from the Sony remote. More money but it works.
