Our sony dvd player and Panasonic TC-P50G20 are hooked up through a Pioneer VSX-23THX receiver using HDMI cables, all was working fine for about 5 years but now when we try to watch a dvd we only get sound no picture. We do have a picture when just watching tv. The only thing that we ever did different, I let my grandson hook up his xbox and play games. I don't know if that would have changed anything. (my grandsons xbox was only hooked up for one day) Could that have caused the problem or has the receiver gone bad? Your help would be very much appreciated.

We have since original posting tried a different HDMI cord to see if that was the problem but had the same results. We then put connection directly from the Sony dvd player to the tv and got picture and sound, so at this point we are assuming it must be our Pioneer receiver, which I'm hoping isn't, for us it was a very expensive purchase.

Solution
I suspect that when your grandson connected his Xbox he didn't properly reconnect the DVD.
Check the back of the receiver to see which HDMI input the DVD is connected to.
Most AV receiver has an input set up menu that assigns that connection to an input name. Make sure it is assigned to DVD.
You can also try selecting each the input on the receiver. That HDMI connection may be assigned to another input by default.
