Would like to have spellcheck work in English for the first line of each paragraph but work in French for the subsequent lines in each paragraph.

Solution
In Microsoft Word, you can set different language to different paragraphs. So, split your paragraph in two, set first paragraph to English, second paragraph to French.
No answer per se but it would be helpful if you post what word processor or other application(s) you are using.

Thinking "out loud.....":

Perhaps some macro could be applied but that will probably require very rigid adherence to the document's structure and paragraphs.

The other thought would be that there would be two documents. One in English for the first sentences and the second document for the remaining sentences. Use some "mail merge" to end up with one final "spell checked" document.

Could become cumbersome and confusing depending on the size and complexity of your work.

Knowing what application you are using will help solicit other suggestions.

Thanks for pointing out the shortcomings in my initial entry. I am using MS Word 2013. I believe I may have solved the issue of having spellcheck work in English for the first line of each paragraph and work in French for subsequent lines in each paragraph by setting up two different styles. The first style would be for the first line of a paragraph and has the language set to English, whereas the second style applies to the rest of each paragraph and has the language set to French.
