If you click on start, select control panel then click on power options find the power plan you're on you will be able to change how the laptop behaves when the lid is open or close. You can change many things me I turn all features off.
All that is happening is your laptop is in sleep mode or hibernating and is not fully powered off, may find a updated to your operating system changed these settings.
