Can someone tell me if I should upgrade to a 3840qm or get a 7700hq laptop. I currently have a Hp 8570w with an m1000m in it. My passmark for the m1000m is a staggering 3500, so it makes me think I should just keep the luck I have with this laptop. Current cpu is 3610qm. Thank you. I am already bias a little but I want to hear other people's theories. I

The way I see it, you have a workstation that seems to work perfectly. It's a bit old, of course, but it can run Windows 10 (64-bit) and HP still provides essential drivers:

http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/readIndex?sp4ts.oid=5257503&swLangOid=8&swEnvOid=4192

The Quadro K1000M hasn't let you down yet, and notebookcheck.net rated the 8570W higher than a ThinkPad W530 in terms of build quality and sturdiness, back in 2012...

If you have the cash to get a Kaby Lake laptop/workstation, then by all means go ahead - but don't ditch the HP just yet.

No issues RGD1101, other than when I choose to 'open with other', a weird program called 1% keeps popping up. I think it is a virus but I'm to lazy to check files.

GreyCatz, I think you would be right if I did not check prices lately. I would be better off making the switch now because of resale on my hp is still moderate. Especially after the GPU upgrade.

I was wondering If someone was going to tell me the benefits to having 7th gen cpu versus the 3rd gen cpu. The 7700hq is just above the 3840qm on Passmark's scale. I figured the cpu upgrade would make sense for $200 versus $1000 for a new rig. But the missing instructions makes me feel like I will like the 7th gen better even though the 3rd gen is right next to it on a graph. I have seen cinebenches of both and wooey the 7700hq is nice. I want that for mental ray rendering and unreal engine rendering.

By the way GreyCatz, the gpu is an m1000m and not k1000m. I hope I don't lose stability in max, maya, and unreal by switching to GTX. That is something I notice in class when everyone uses the school computers which decided to go with 960 upgrades and get rid of Quadro. Dumb f thing to do.

Sorry it took so long to reply, I had midterms and then projects.

The quadrinos are designed for 3d rendering. As for unreal engine rendering the geforce maybe better as that us used for making games. The geforce gpus are capabe of doing 3d rendering as I have done it for my uni course and I had a gt 650m which not powerful for today but for me it was good. If you are doing this professionally I would keep the gpu you have or look for the latest one and get a decent cpu like a i7 6700hq.

Thank you for your reply,

Rendering for Unreal uses CPU.

GPU is only used for viewport and real time calculations.

Rendering in 3d max, Mental-Ray and Scan-Line renders are CPU based. VRay uses GPU but is also a 10k software and I am poor, else I would buy the Quadro P6000 and put it with a $5k Xeon and watch while my butler carries it around for me.

I-Ray is free and useful for meetings but that is only because you can control the quality of the render to a finer point to be so draft but beautiful at the same time, that renderer uses GPU too. M series is the newest Quadro you can get in a laptop as of now.

6700HQ is barely above my 3610QM and the 3840QM kills it, not even thinking about it and haven't ever since it came out.

The 7700HQ finally brings some hope with beating the 3840QM in benchmarks and has newer instruction sets. There are security features that are lost on the newer generation CPU though. all of these things and more are what I was hoping to hear peoples views on. I guess no one likes geeking out anymore.

I bought my first Elitebook a little over a month ago. I was so impressed with the 8440p's quality that I promptly bought TWO 85570w's! I got one for $158, took 16 Gigs of RAM out, and sold it a week later for $290! Then, I sold that 1333MHz of RAM for $80 to make $370 for a $158 purchase! The other 8570w I had used that 1333MHz stuff in with my other 16 Gigs of 1600MHz RAM but realized I had better, faster RAM using only the 1600MHz. So, I now have this beautiful and fast 8570w with just the 16 GB RAM it needs. The only drawback is the K1000M GPU and the 1TB HDD. I will soon replace the HDD with a 480-512 GB SSD, but I guess I may be stuck with the not-too-bad K1000M for awhhile until I can find a bitchin' 8770w with DreamColor, the i7-3940XM CPU, and K3100M instead of K4000M GPU. I'll go with 32GB RAM in the 8770W. I strongly recommend these older Elitebooks to anyone short on cash. They are definitely the nicest, strongest, best-performing of ALL the laptops out there, but for possibly the absolute latest i-7's and certainly anything with an i-9 in it. Must be nice to have one of those! DO NOT GET RID OF YOUR ELITEBOOKS JUST YET!

Hello Everyone that will see this post. I have a new Clevo from Prostar 2017 with the 7700HQ and gtx 1050. I have 32GB of ram and a 2TB SSHD with Optane. My old Computer would have been able to sit sided by side in a dual against this one. I should have just upgraded to the 3820QM. But that was because that m1000m I had was benchmarking the same as this gtx 1050. If you can find those pieces of hardware for your 8570w than head my warning now, you will not hinder if you go that route. The only thing I noticed is that the RAM is hella faster in this and will leave a 32gb 8570w in the dirt. I'd say in comparison with benchmark then a 32gb ddr3 would be about as fast as 16gb ddr4. That is just my first hand experienced opinion, though.

You are right on this. And, really, 32GB of RAM is WASTED unless you do professional video editing or high-end scientific work. I recommend using 2 sticks of 8GB @1600MHz instead of 4 sticks of 2GB. Runs better for me on the 8570w, and with the 2 sticks of 8GB, you can always easily add another two to get the 32GB RAM if you really need it. More can be done with these units simply by addig SSD's mSATA, quality Crucial RAM, etc. I have a MONSTER 8770w with Dream Color coming this week and will immediately add a 120GB Crucial mSATA for the Win10Pro64 OS, and a new 525GB Crucial SSD to speed it WAY up. The Windows Experience score will go from 5.9 to at least 7.4! I absolutely love these Elitebooks. And, no matter how much faster or seemingly better or newer a laptop is, I will ALWAYS opt for these bricks. They are so damage-proof and well designed and made that I don't see any value in buying a more-expensive MSI or whatever. Go with the Elitebooks, folks! You won't regret it.
