Hello,

I've recently received an ASUS K50IJ laptop from a friend who didn't need it anymore, it works fine, except for the screen.
The backlight somewhat flickers as if the refresh rate was very low, it's like a line of backlight constantly moves from the botton to the top. I've tried Windows and Ubuntu and it's visible in both (also in the bios and bootscreen). The rate of the flicker seems to change somewhat overtime. Should I open the laptop and check the ribbon cables or is there a software fix?

Thanks!

It sounds more like it has 'calmed' so to speak, but I doubt it has anything to do with the Windows installation. I would just keep in mind that it can get worse, or the display completely go, at any time.

That doesn't sound like software. Try this...

1. Turn the laptop off (not sleep or hibernate but off).
2. Connect an external monitor to the laptop.
3. Turn on the external monitor.
4. Turn on the laptop.

NOTE: You may have to press an "external monitor" button. Could be the f4 button or a button with two monitors on it, for the external monitor to work.

If you can see fine on the external monitor, then your attached display, or the ribbon cable that connects it, are your problem.

If you can't see on the external monitor at all, or the problem occurs on the external monitor as well, then it is probably the graphics card/GPU that is the problem, which may require the motherboard be replaced.

Here's the weird part. I just installed Windows 10 and the issue is almost gone. When I installed the drivers in Windows 10, the refresh rate seemed to just sort of click. But it still does the weird lines in the bios and the boot screen. (And also in Windows 7 and Ubuntu) If the screen is totally black you can still kinda see the flickering but you would have to know it's there to see it.

Any ideas why or was this always intended by Asus?

I know it seems that way, but this calming happens everytime I boot.
So when I turn the computer on, the flickering's there. But once it's about 10 seconds into booting, it stops instantly
