How to connect speakers to TV?

Hi,

My TV has SPDIF digital audio out and I have a 5.1 speaker system (i.e. speakers with speaker wire - the type where you can see the actual wire there are no connectors).

I need a device that will:

a) Enable me to listen to the TV using the speakers, i.e. a device that will play sound using the SPDIF input from the TV; and
b) As an added bonus, but not an absolute requirement, the ability to play DVD's.

As you can tell, I mostly need a device that will enable my normal channels TV channels to be watched with sound coming out of the speaker wires.

Please can someone recommend me something as I don't know which device I need. I imagine it's some kind of DVD player but home theatres tend to come with speakers which I do not need.

Thanks!

What you need is a surround sound receiver. These do not have built in disc players.
The receiver will have an optical input, process the surround sound, and amplify the audio to drive the speakers. You could use an older used one that lacks HDMI inputs. That would make it cheaper.
These will not have an amplifier for the subwoofer since it's assumed that you use a self powered sub. If your sub is passive like the other 5 speakers (typical of a home theater in a box system) then you will need an additional subwoofer amp.
