Hello Everyone,

First of all - Really sorry for such a long narration / but I had to explain everything I did.

I am an existing customer of Netflix since the last 2 years or so..using Netflx through Apple-TV

I very recently (Dec-2016) bought a new 4k UHD TV (Model : UE55KS9000, Samsung), and since I had Netflix already I tried playing 4k videos on it, which didn’t play obviously as my internet was only 6Mbps.

I was advised by the customer services that 4k will only play on connections over 25 Mbps.

I was adamant to see 4K, so I got new fibre line (40 Mbps) which was installed after a long wait on 11th Jan.

As I was getting bandwidth of 36Mbps to the TV by WiFi, I upgraded my Netflix account and was ready to go…

I looked for “UHD” contents on Netflix and played “House of Cards Season 4” just to see the much awaited “4K” reception…it’s no better than 1080p HD played through my Apple TV Netflix app.

I presumed, and read that there will be a difference of those extra pixels and will be 4 times better than usual 1080p HD.

I called Netflix customer services over chat line and was told to do many trouble shooting things – which I did, but nothing happened.

I was told to “ask the ISP to reset my connection” – whatever that meant, was done eventually.

Still – the playbacks from my apple tv Netflix app and the “so called 4K” on my Samsung’s Netflix app are exactly the same to me.

I am not sure that this is 4K playing on my TV…or is it normal 1080p HD – there is absolutely no way to verify this..having said that the youtube videos are million times better, and its youtube!

At least “amazon prime” displays the info about what is being played – HD 1080p, HDR, or UHD..but Neflix doesn’t !

Is there a way I can verify if it was actually playing 4K content - information like format / bitrate etc.

Thanks for all your help!

regards
Sam

I only had a 12mbps connection when I got my 65KS9500 last year and then upgraded to a 50mbps in Dec and I have no problem getting 4K Netflix playback even at 12mbps but it does seems a bit better with 50mbps. Now don't expect it to look as good as a UHD Bluray since streamed 4K uses a more compressed H.265 format. Never watched House of cards, try some of the more recent 4K shows like "Chef's Table" and "Sense 8" and you should see a difference.

Make sure you have upgraded the Samsung software, including the Netflix client.

Also, are you a legacy Netflix user? Your account may need to be upgraded from the $7.99 rate to $9.99 to get UHD content.

I have an LG 4K set, and the difference is amazing. The Crown is also 4K, and it was beautiful in 4K.

And yes, I've done packet analysis on Netflix streams and 25-30Mbps is required; this is a fact.

Is there a way that I can be able to do a verify if actual 4K was being played, reason being if the bandwidth is not stable Netflix tends to play HD and I wouldn't even know..

When you have the show on, try press the info button on the remote. If it's streaming in 4K, it should say "2160" in the top left of the screen. Press info again to make it disappear.
