No PICTURE on TV when connected via HDMI cable

I have connected a Asus laptop to a Toshiba TV via HDMI lead, the sound quality is great - but I cannot get a picture. All I can see on the TV is the screensaver or background from my laptop - no icons are visible either.
I have tried the Display section on Control Panel and ensured that the screens are showing as extended.
Any other suggestions please?

Instead of extended try setting it to clone. Windows key + p is quicker than going through control panel.

If your laptop display resolution is great than the TV can handle you won't get a picture.
Set the laptop for extended or 2nd screen.
Set that screen to the native resolution of the TV. 1280 x 720 should work but may not give you the best result.
