I got a a smart tv recently but never understood how you can watch movies and tv episodes on your tv. Do i need some kind of specific cable or program to get my pc screen to display on tv. Im thinking about VLC player for example.

What is the specific name of the cable i need and do i need a certain thing inside my pc to even be able to do this ?

The tv is a 55" samsung UHD and my pc is prretty current. I want to watch episodes of tv shows on my tv since my monitor is only "24. Pls help the only thing ive ever gotten to work is a program named "PLEX" where i could watch a friend of mines downloads but it would buffer for some reason too much on the old tv i had which had the Plex program installed on my PS3 which was setup wireless but my pc ran it well which is wired.

if you want to use the smart tv to open files on your pc, there must be a network joining them and in the tv there must be a stream detection and your pc must be streaming the content, for example using that plex server on the pc and the app installed on the tv

a external hard disk connected to the tv is simpler to set up and will do almost the same

the simplest way is avoid using the smart tv feature and use a hdmi cable from the pc to the tv and use it as a monitor, then open what you want on the pc and watch it on the big screen as a second or main monitor to avoid configuring the plex account, server and app on those devices

Look for a Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime button on your remote. If you don't have a subscription to any of those services, it won't work. Your TV should have a wifi adapter built into it as well as an ethernet port. Or, you can just plug your PC into the TV. If it is a recently built PC, as you say it is, then there is a good chance that it has an HDMI port. Just use an HDMI cable to hook it up to the TV and you should be able to use the TV as its display without any needing to do anything else except maybe change the audio source to the TV.

Solution

1. Through Internet. Your smartTV then needs to be hooked up to your Internet Service Provider Consult manual how to do this.

2. Subscription maybe required, it may not be free, don't get too excited just yet.

Generally, there are several ways to transfer and play videos on your Samsung TV. Following are the recommended top 2 ways:
Play videos on Samsung Smart TV via a USB flash drive.
Almost every Samsung Smart TV supports USB flash drives, please just copy the videos to the USB flash drive first from the computer. Then you can plug in the USB drive to the USB interface of your Samsung TV. Ultimately, you can choose to play local source media files on the Samsung TV and locate the videos from the USB drive to start to play. This is the most common and easiest way.
Play videos on Samsung Smart TV by burning a DVD
If you have a DVD burner on your computer, you can also burn the videos to a DVD first, then plug in the DVD disc to your Samsung TV to play. However, DVD is on the way out, so more and more new devices including some model of Samsung TVs don’t support DVD disc any more. Please have a check before you do that. Anyway, burning to DVD is a good way to backup and play videos. If you do want to play DVDs on some TV which doesn’t have a built-in DVD Rom, you can also buy an external DVD player.
