I have a Lenovo ThinkPad E460 purchased with Windows 10 and 500GB HDD. I want to swap the HDD with an SSD (probably 500GB, not that it matters). The machine is a few months old and still under warranty. My question is, if I change the HDD with an SSD myself will that void the warranty? Also, how can I install the Windows again on the new drive? If I cannot do any of this on my own, who should send my laptop to in order to do the task?

Solution
Changing the drive should not affect the warranty.

You can clone the original drive directly over to a new 500GB SSD, easily.

You'll need a USB cable like this: https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-SATA-Drive-Adapter-Cable/dp/B00HJZJI84

Some drives come with one included.

How to?
This was written for a desktop, but the procedure is basically the same.
-----------------------------
Verify the actual used space on the current drive is significantly below the size of the new SSD
Download and install Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration, if a Samsung SSD)
Power off
Disconnect ALL drives except the current C and the new SSD
Power up
Run the Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration)...

Run the Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration)
Select ALL the partitions on the existing C drive
Click the 'Clone' button
Wait until it is done
When it finishes, power off
Disconnect ALL drives except for the new SSD
[strike]Swap the SATA cables around so that the new drive is connected to the same SATA port as the old drive[/strike]
Take out the old HDD< and replace it with the new SSD.
Power up, and verify the BIOS boot order
If good, continue the power up

It should boot from the new drive, just like the old drive.
Maybe reboot a time or two, just to make sure.

If it works, and it should, all is good.

changing hard drive shouldnt void your warranty in my opinion

if anything happened you could just put the old one back in

as long as its in a place thats accessible of course--if its one of those where you need to dismantle half the laptop to get to the hard drive ones then yes you might void the warranty

you can buy a usb to sata cable and just plug the usb to sata cable to the ssd and plug it into usb on laptop and use free cloning software like macrium

lol i really need to type faster beat to it

my new replies/updates and private messages box is still way way down at the bottom of the page instead of up the top like normal, very annoying having to scroll way down there to see it all the time--you arent getting that there?

I just have to pick the new SSD. I see the Samsung 850 eve is well recommended, but seems a bit more expensive than I expected. Any recommendations other than this one?
