I wanted to hook my xbox 360 to an asus monitor via HMDI cable i have no audio even though my monitor has built in speakers and i have searched online for A LONG TIME (not to mention i can hear sound when i plug my headphones into the back of the monitor)

What monitor model exactly ??
It sounds to me as though the monitor doesn't actually have speakers , just a digital to analog converter & audio passthrough to the headphone out .

Monitor speakers sound awful anyway in all fairness ,have you thought about buying a cheap 2.1 powered speaker set??

If your monitor is anything like mine, the loss of quality when using the monitor headphone out.. well its rubbish. though i was using the input jack on my asus VG248QE as a relay from my soundcard, so maybe the fault lies there.

Nah, it's the rubbish speakers in the monitor, way too small to produce decent sound quality. You just can't get decent speakers with good resonance inside an LCD monitor, physically impossible - monitor case isn't deep enough. Decent speaker sound requires at least a 5-inch deep enclosure for good bass, monitors are not even close to being 5-inches deep.

BringerOfTea - I don't understand why you'd run analog into the monitor , & analog out rather than running straight from pc to your audio device - just asking for cross interference as you're ampifying the audio twice.

Digital pcm via HDMI/dp & monitor conversion to analog out is a different story , used a lot of screens , aoc/lg/Asus/benq - they've all done a fairly bang up job really, hardly audiophile quality but absolutely fine for gaming , movie & general music use.
Bonus us when you have multiple inputs & devices connected youget auto audio switching along with switching the input.
Running a sat box, Xbox one, & PC on mine & it just makes things neat & easy .
I wouldn't buy a monitor without digital to analog pass through , would be a priority for me personally.

Phillip, I havent tried to use the monitor speakers, it was just to test my bowers and wilkins p5 with the short cable, and it sounded like rubbish connected to the monitor headphone jack,

But as stated above, what model would help

The 1 meter cable on my bowers and wilkins p5 wouldnt allow me to connect to the sound card AND sit comfortably infront of the screen at the same time... I wrote it off when my Audio technica arrived sporting a long enough cable.

^ I understand now - you're using fairly high end studio monitors there though
You'd certainly get bad & noticeable degradation running in & out of monitor, I'd be certain the sensitivity & overall quality on your audio outputs is far far better than a monitor headphone output.
