My friend gave me his lap top, said it worked, it just needed a HDD cuz he took his out. It then sat for 3 years because I forgot about it. Son needs a lap top now so I buy an HDD, plug it into wall assuming battery is shot and I get nothing. The power pack lights up, but computer is dead. No bios, no fans, no lights.

What could have happened in the 3 years it sat? It wasn't abused in any way... Just sat on a shelf. Is it possible that the battery is so dead that it isn't allowing power to complete any circuit? Will these things run with no battery pack installed and plugged into wall?

If the battery is bad, you may not be able to power it off the wall.
It is worth a shot to try a new battery. To be certain, buy a legitimate Asus battery of the same part number you take out.
Not all replacements work properly.

never mind... upon attempting to play with the battery in vs out I realized there is a bad connection with the power cord at the lap top. wiggle it and shuts the light off and on. Thanks for your time folks
