Hi. I'm looking at a few laptops with different GPUs. I won't be doing much gaming on it, but I'd like to pick up Civ 6 eventually. Which is the more capable graphics card:
Intel Iris 540 or AMD Radeon R7 m460?
Thanks.

Solution
The AMD option will likely run a little louder, although it depends on the overall cooling limitations of a specific laptop model.

Mobile GPU's don't have their own fan (at least, not in the same way a desktop GPU does) - the discreet GPU is usually placed in close proximity to the CPU, with one fan cooling both.

Generally, Intel run cooler/quieter than AMD, and that's true pretty much across the board - maybe Zen will change that, but I'd really need to see which two laptops you're comparing specifically to give a better indication.
The Iris 540 is the integrated graphics of mobile Skylake CPUs, and it's performance will vary depending on the specific chip (i3/i5/i7 etc) and whether it's paired with DDR3L or DDR4 RAM.

The R7 460M is a dedicated GPU from AMD, but very much an entry level card.

They're very much comparable, with neither being capable of modern gaming >Low settings. The resulting clock speeds for the 540 if it's part of an i7 chip would give it a very slight edge. But if you're looking at an i3 or i5 laptop vs the AMD offering, they'd perform very much the same IMO.

Thanks for your quick answer. So, they are pretty much comparable.
One related question:
My wife asked that this laptop be quiet (I'm getting an SSD, for example). Can you think of any reason why one of these GPUs would make the laptop louder (more fan noise) than the other? Runs hotter, has its own fan, etc?
