I have a toshiba laptop and it almost 3yrs old.
Last month, i got a minor problem - that laptop dont start at my first boot. The hardware seems active but no display. I have to force it off and turn it on again to start.
Then it gotten worst. when I turn it on, no display but lights are on, fan is functioning, cd rom is functioning. I need to force it turn off(holding power button) and turn it on for so many times...sometimes it only takes about 10 "off then on" attempts to boot and sometime it takees forever that I just stop and giveup on booting.
Notes:
> The button's light and power light are on.
> You can hear the fan spinning
> fan blows really hot air (it only blows hot air when im using heavy software programs)
> CD rom is active, it makes sound as usual
> Screen is black/off
> I tried an external monitor but it doesnt work and i dont think graphics/display is the problem
> I also tried the "remove and insert again" process with the battery, charger, and ram

Solution
Then the laptop itself isn't the problem.

Since you said an external monitor doesn't work either, which would have been something I would suggest you try, then that means that your Graphics Card/GPU is most likely the culprit. This also means that you may well have to replace the motherboard.
