how do i get my jvc gr-dvl725u video transferred to a laptop? I have a firewire to usb 2.0 cable, but my laptop does not recognize the camcorder

The most likely problem is the Firewire to USB cable. I have yet to hear of one of those actually working. If you have the A/V cable that came with the camcorder you best bet would be to get a video capture device. The camcorder would connect to the device via the A/V cable and the computer to the device via a USB cable.
