Hi guys, thanks so much for helping. So I have this laptop which I just bought not long ago, maybe about 4 - 5 months. One day when I tried to power it on, it does not power on. Instead, the power led lights up and the fan starts working but the screen remains black. It took me about 10 + retries before I realized that the computer was on, it was just that the screen is so dark, you have to point a flashlight at it to see what's going on. With that, I thought it was a display issue thus I connect it to an external monitor to see if it works. It works and I did not look further into the problem assuming it was a back-light issue.

Things took a turn for the worse this morning when I tried to power it on. It does not even power on. I then start suspecting if there was a hidden problem.

I opened up my laptop and realized that the motherboard was corroded. There were white spots on it so my classmates probably got some water on my laptop and not tell me anything. I was furious but I maintained my cool and tried to figure out what I can do from here. After much researching, I got a bunch of different ideas but I cannot piece them together. Would you guys guide me on the proper steps to do from here? I removed the battery and have unplug all cables on my laptop.

Here are some pictures ( slightly to the bottom left is the white spot)

If possible, do let me know what part of the mobo is that area. I am happy to provide any extra needed information.

sorry for the bad english, thank you guys so much

Without being able to see the motherboard myself & get an idea of the scale of damage, motherboard replacement is the only thing I can suggest.

I would contact a local computer repair shop before ASUS though. ASUS will likely only go the replacement route. A local store may have an alternative.
Without a lot of context, that appears to be where your touchpad connects to the motherboard.
Doesn't appear to be corrosion necessarily, but clearly that's not right.

Any damage, especially water damage etc, can cause all sorts of problems (although a dimmed scree initiallyn is an interesting outcome). A motherboard replacement may be possible - but depending on the laptop specifically, it may not be cost effective

That is what I am afraid of, I am a student thus do not have much savings, replacing this laptop would cost a bomb. Is there any information you need that I can provide? My laptop model is the Asus x550

An overview of the mobo would be the same as this https://youtu.be/1iLcHuQhZjQ?t=5m7s

The exact location would be here http://tinypic.com/r/34y89cx/9

What else could it be other than corrosion, does corrosion usually means replacing the entire mobo? Thanks so much once again and sorry for the numerous questions, I am really in a panic right now

That's on the wrong edge of the motherboard to be directly related to the display, so there's likely more than a single point of damage.

Not sure what to tell you here. Depending on the specific model/CPU of your laptop, and whether you want a new or used motherboard, you could be looking at anywhere from $100-$350 for a replacement part via Ebay. You'd have to be 100% of the match too, as you likely can't return them due to incorrect part selection.

I guess that's all I can do for now. Thanks so much for your answers though, really appreciate it, I would try to contact Asus and see if they can repair it for me hopefully at a cheaper price. Some days are just bad days I guess. Once again thank you
