I need to have my optical cable from the cable box to TV so i can connect my fire stick and get sound via surround sound. prob is my Philips TV does not have an optical IN
UNBELIEVABLE that a 55" wouldn't but alas, here i am
is there an audio extractor of some sort that I can get to solve the problem or any other suggestions?

I don't understand how the Fire Stick has something to do with your cable tv box.

TV, in general don't have Toslink IN because that's for audio. In general, all audio are routed the the AV Receiver, specially when you are saying surround because the TV by itself can't do surround.

A standard hookup will be:

All components (including a Fire Stick and cable box) ----> AV Receiver -----> TV.

Your turn to clarify your situation.

the problem is i can't get surround sound with the fire stick via hdmi2
sound from the stick only comes through the TV speaker which is extremely sucky
i suppose if i add an HDMI switch to HDMI 1 (ARC) that will solve the problem?

Oh, now I get it. This is common prob, people ask this everyday.

Fact: TVs don't "pass-thru" surround information out of the TV, don't ask me why they just don't, so what do you do?

So I repeat, hookup: FireStick ----> Receiver ----> TV.

If you don't have a receiver with multiple HDMI ports, ooops. Are u using an AV receiver at all?

If your TV and Receiver, both MUST have ARC, try it, but I have a feeling you already did.

the Sony has only 1 HDMI in
hence the question
I suppose HDMI splitter is the answer then
yes, both have ARC but according to the SONY BDV-E770W manual, when you use a Toslink setup, it takes precedence over HDMI
The TV is Phillips 55PFL5706
this is so frustrating... sigh

Hey THANK YOU for that
so when the thingamabob arrives, i will connect it to the hdmi output of the Sony HT?
sorry, my speciality is neuroplasticity - I'm a complete doorknob when it comes to setting up AV systems.
