So my local website has a used Alienware M17x for 800$ canadian
it comes with
screen 1920x1080 17.3"
Intel Core i7-4700MQ CPU @ 2.40 GHz (6MB Cache, up to 3.4GHz w/ Turbo Boost)
AMD Radeon R9 M290X with 4GB GDDR5
16 gb ram
1TB 5400RPM SATA 6Gb/s + 80GB mSATA SSD Caching
and a Targus cooling pad

Wondring if this will play gta 5 and other AAA titles decently, and what destop gpu the r9 m290x compares to?

It is a nice deal. That GPU compares to something like a GTX 750 ti (basically better). You will be able to play AAA titles but not maxed out obviously, but on Low-Med settings probably.

I have an I7 2600k 16gb ram, with gtx 680 ref as my main pc.
My other pc is i7 870 16gb ram with gtx 750 ti.

so is the laptop in between these two pc in terms of gaming performance?

Estimable
The laptop is about a 750ti.
I'd upgrade that graphics card in the Sandy Bridge PC though, your CPU is perfectly fine, it'll keep up with a 6700k at stock no problems with a slight OC.
What would be your budget for an upgrade?
What's your current resolution?
