Now no boot or lights, charge works and all seems good ..What did I blow up and how to repair it?

Hi,

Unfortunately due to you causing the short there would now be damage to the main board of the laptop. The battery still charges because that circuit is on a whole different area of the main board.

For the amount you would have to spend on a new board you would be better off upgrading to a new laptop, that's if you could even find one because the laptop is a much older model.
