Since last week my laptop has become quite noisy: can hear a buzzing sound from 6 feet.

It was an insignificant hum before.

Help.

Solution
More than likely, the sound you are hearing is the cooling fan running as fast as it can to keep the system cool. See what you can do to remove any dust from the cooling vents. Perhaps take it to a professional to take apart and clear the dust from interior vents/cooling fan blades.
