Video distorted on laptop after hdmi connection

Hello I really need some help with this issue. I'm not a techie person so step by step instruction would be great.
My laptop plays videos distorted (zoomed) after I put my hdmi cord in and connected it into my Philips smart tv. Please help me fix this issue.

Are you saying the video is distorted on the TV or on the laptop screen after it was connected to the TV? Did you set the correct resolution for your TV in Windows? Resolution should be set to the highest it can go, but if you have the screens set to duplicate then it won't give you the correct options since both screens have to run on the same resolution. For a regular full HD TV resolution should be 1920x1080
