Aloha,

While away from home, my Toshiba Satellite L850D began to not charge while plugged in, and eventually the battery went to 0% and shut off even though it was plugged in. The power light is white (or orange if the battery is in), but when I press the power button, the system light just blinks on then off again.

Once home I tried using a universal charging cable, with and without the battery, but I get the same result. I also tried unplugging it without the battery and holding down the power button for about 1 minute.

I set it aside for about 1 month, and now I am trying again.

In only one of my trobleshooting iterations, the laptop showed a BIOS like screen warning me that the motherboard battery was low and I needed to change the date/time. When I pressed the arrow button it shut down again.

Could there be something (on the motherboard perhaps) that could have failed like a fuse? What shoudl be my next trouble shooting steps?

Well it could be the CMOS battery needs replacing. It could also be the charging circuit on the motherboard which is giving you the other issue. They both could be separate yet connected problems as well. If it is the charging circuit, you may well need to replace the motherboard.

If the laptop is under warranty, I would contact the manufacturer about a repair or replacement, as to not void that warranty.

If it isn't under warranty, then you are free to have whoever you want do the work, even yourself.

I replaced the CMOS battery and am still getting the same problem.

It isn't under warranty.
