Hi, I am working on an HP Pavilion Sleekbook 15 running windows 8.1 64bit. The problem it has is that the keyboard is not working, but the fn keys (like wifi and volume) do work just fine.
Here is a list of the things that have been tried and their result (if any):
*The owner claims they did a factory reset and a system restore. They went from windows 10 back to 8.1. The problem remained the same.
*I plugged in a USB keyboard and I am able to type to enter the password. However, after I log in the USB keyboard stops working too.
*Uninstalled the keyboard drivers and rebooted.
*Checked sticky keys and filter keys, both are off.
*I have created a new test user account. The problem remained the same in that account.
*I ran Malwarebytes which found nothing.
*I ran CCleaner which found 1254 registry issues. Down to only 2 now and the problem persists.
*I booted into safe mode and the issue is just the same there.
*I went into the BIOS and here the USB keyboard remains functional but the laptop's keyboard does not.
One thing I tried that did show some progress was to remove the battery for 5 minutes and hold the power button for 30 sec. After which I put the battery back in and plugged in the power. After that, I was able to type in the password with the laptop's keyboard but after logging in things went back to the same.
Before leaving for work I left the battery out and the laptop unplugged to see if that helped once I get back home. I am thinking of booting into Linux from a USB to see if this shows any differences. Also, I will run Spybot and perform a factory reset myself just in case.
Any further suggestions OR ideas on what the problem might be (hardware?) are greatly appreciated, thanks.
Update: After getting home I did the "no battery" trick i mentioned earlier and it worked...for longer, but after a few minutes it was back to the same. I did it one more time and so far i am at almost 30 minutes of it working perfectly. Given that it seemed to work before but went back to not working I am hesitant to call this a victory yet. I will continue to monitor and update. And would still love some input.
