Hey!

I was looking at the new Alienware 15 with 1070 and its kinda hard to find any retailers [official website only] is it even out? And is there any info about thermals, noise and throttling?

Solution

Buy from Dell because you will get the warranty otherwise you are kinda stuck with a really crappy one and I dont think anyone has them yet other than dell. Thermals are stellar as always only laptops that really have big issues with thermal throttling are MSI units.

I would have to say noise is always a issue with gaming laptops, they need to stay col and lets face it, a powerful cpu and gpu will create heat. and the fan will run while gaming, i just wear headphones and dont even notice that anything is running.

This post here may or may not be relevent as its been 2 months since your question, but I just got this for about 2 weeks and try to fill in.

My specs - AW 15 i7-6820HK 16GB 512GBPCIe+1TB HDD gtx 1070
I've toyed around with MSI before although not an ideal comparison to compare in terms of specs to this machine. & forgive me as I'm not tech person. I think for most of the comparison with newer models u can just google the detail specs, ssd, screen performances etc, but I'm just stating my simple experience with this.

Heat - the best, hands down. The heat is noticable only at the upper strip along the power button immediately beneath the screen, above the function keys. This meaning at the tip of your finger when u rest your wrist on the keyboard base. And only when I play XCOM 2 at high setting. In low GPU usage games (Planetbase), almost no heat. For now I've only played few hours, about an hour straight each session and I don't feel any throttling yet (and I rarely turn off, leaving it only in hibernate mode)
Fan noise - Again, barely noticable. I play with a desk fan in my room so the laptop fan noise is almost non-existent. However even in a quiet room the fan noise is there but not distracting, and only kicks off in high GPU setting. When I bring to my office the wall panasonic aircond (which is already silent for me) less than a meter away is louder than the machine.
AlienFX - if u like this kind of thing. I just shut it off.
Killer Network - I've read in forums about many different problems but none for me, yet
The rest (IPS screen, SSD, HDD) I think is more or less the same for similar spec-ed machine.

Few things I would like to highlight -
1) The 1st day when I got this machine I noticed frequent shutdown everytime I played using high setting GPU. Informed Dell and they came for on-site service, replaced the motherboard. Excellent
2) Audio - speakers are terrible. I'll bet the first thing u do is max out the vol, and leave it there. Bass is absent. Playing movies using std win 10 player, u can barely hear their voices and jumbled up sound in explosions or action scenes. I dont like headphones, fortunately I've got logitech x50 to compensate. Just get VLC and max vol to 200%
3) Macro keys - I dont play online game much, not recording games so its very much useless for me. U can tweak their functions, but for me its very limited - I can assign volume, but not brightness, trackpad (or is it because I've not figured out). But still... no use for me. Their placement to the extreme left is also not to my liking, as I've used to being Ctrl as my left lower most.
4) Trackpad - I rarely use, 99% using mouse. I do appreciate physical buttons on the trackpad. However I never liked trackpads that are slightly 'depressed' or lower as compared to the rest of the keyboard. Almost always collects dust at the edges.
5) Keyboard and base are oil and dust magnet

Another point I would like to highlight - if u frequently travel and bring this with u, u might want to ask for a bigger battery (99Wh as compared to 68Wh). I've not tested this on battery yet, I rarely do.
