Chrome "waiting for cache" system hang

When loading a new webpage, there is a good chance of my entire computer freezing up while Google Chrome is "waiting for cache." During this period, CPU usage will plummet to around 2% and disk usage (all disks) will jump to 100% and hang there for about a minute. This only started happening in earnest after the recent update to Windows 10. Chrome is installed on Drive 1. Drive 1's usage spikes first, then is followed by Drive 2. Both spikes end simultaneously.

Seems more like a malware to me. Did you scan your system?

I reinstalled the OS and replaced Drive 2 with a Samsung EVO 850 SSD. It's happening more than ever.

If you have an issue with Chrome freezing up your Windows or Linux box, this worked for me:

1. Export your bookmarks.
2. Delete Chrome Sync Data: https

/support.google.com/chrome/answer/6386691?hl=en
3. That should do it.

For me, it might have been the purchase of a new SSD and the fact that once upon a time, I had adware named Trovigo in my browser.

At least now I am enjoying a freeze-free Chrome

I think I have stumbled across a solution. At least it seems to be working for me now.

I noticed i haven't re-installed my computer for way over half a year, so I went to do that. But, before i did so, i remembered that when i got my new motherboard and CPU, I left the SATA mode in IDE, since I couldn't seem to get AHCI to work. Before I re-installed, i tested the performance of my Samsung 850 Pro drive, and it was woeful to say the least. After some tinkering in the BIOS, I was able to make it boot with AHCI SATA mode enabled, instead of legacy IDE mode.

I have now, just for the sake of it, installed Chrome - after all my normal installed programs and apps. I have logged into Chrome sync, have navigated the frontpage of Facebook (not logged in), clicked around bbc.com. So far nothing seems to make it hang.

This does require a new install of Windows for it to work.
