My dvd/surround sound system is finally too annoying to use (Shuts off after an hour of use) and I am wondering if I should buy a new receiver (or amp?) or just buy a new system altogether? My speakers are still working great. 1000W and hoping to use the extra subwoofer laying around. I am asking because I don't know much about receivers or amps, and they all seem expensive.

Solution
If you have a self powered subwoofer (it has its own power cord) laying around then get a new surround sound receiver. You can upgrade the other speakers later.
The sub that comes with dvd/surround systems is usually powered from the main unit and will not work with a stand alone surround receiver since none of these have sub amps built in.
By the way the power rating on the amplifiers in home theater in a box systems is off so much that it is normal for a system with less than 100 watts of power total to be rated in the thousands. Don't worry about the power in a surround receiver. Any one you get will be more powerful than the one you have. If you are on a budget a used on might be the way to go.

Thank you for your reply. I do have self powered subwoofer, and from what you said a receiver is what I need. My old JVC system has a subwoofer that is also self powered but only works on a 9pin cable smh. Which is a shame because its worlds better than the old Sony self powered one. Any chance that can be salvaged?
