There is no magic, VGA and DVI THAT'S IT, that's all you got. HDMI to DVI is your answer, if this converter didn't work, try the next, but that's your only answer HDMI to DVI. Shouldn't be that hard because HDMI is simply DVI without the audio. True, in real life, this can be tricky but just buy from places you can return, no restocking fee.
your likely issue is that you are trying to an hdmi to vga converter that is nothing more than a cable with different ends on it cause they are cheap. Those will not work as they are designed for a certain monitor implementation. You need to buy an "active converter" to convert from digital hdmi to analog vga... lots of boxes out there. You can also use "simple" hdmi to dvi cables / plugs as was pointed out, it's not magic... the signals are the same just on different pins / connectors.
