Connecting Raspberry pi directly to Laptop

I have a raspberry pi 2 and no spare screen to use it with and i dont want to spend alot of money on it. But i do have a laptop so i was thinking if i could connect them. i have tried remote desktop but its too laggy and i want something portable. Any thought? Thanks

edit: im running windows 7

You seem to be going about things wrong. What are you doing with the pi 2? If you don't intend to use a screen on it then most people just ssh into it. If you do plan to use a screen with it then they connect a KB/mouse to it and configure from there.

I want to make a portable system with the pi. But i dont have a spare HDMI monitor or a spare keyboard or mouse and i'd seen on YouTube you could connect the pi to a laptop using a Ethernet cable(directly with no lag) but i could work out how to do it . So i was wondering how to do that or something similar
