Budget Camera for Beginner Photographer

Hi all!

I'm relatively new here, especially to cameras. I have recently become interested in the idea of photography, and want to get a budget camera.

I will be doing cinematic shots/panoramic views, nothing special e.g. film-making. I would like it to have 1080p quality, with video @ either 720p (minimum) or 1080p for OCCASIONAL usage.

Budget is as low as possible, max probably ~ £150-200. (I know it's very low, but I'm on an INCREDIBLY tight budget).

If you want a camera for stills and video then a Nikon D3100 or Canon 550D with their respective kit lens is probably knocking around on eBay or Wex.

On the other hand, if you want a stills camera only then a Nikon D80 or Canon 40D with a 35mm or 50mm lens would be better. They're both good cameras, despite their age, and any photographer worth their salt will tell you that the lens is far more important than the camera.

The best advice I can give is that you go out and try some cameras for yourself. How a camera handles and how you use it is far more important than its technical specification. You don't want to miss the shot of a lifetime because you're faffing around with hard-to-reach buttons.

I will be going into local shops soon, and trying some out, but please give opinions on those. I will obviously get lens kits for them.

None of those cameras are suitable for video. The D80 and D200 can't shoot video at all and whilst the 450D apparently can, it needs to be tethered to a PC. Even then, the resolution and frame rate are appalling; you'll get better results using a mobile phone.

In Nikon's own line-up, the D200 is considered a higher-tier camera than the D80. The 450D is arguably slightly below the D80. Bear in mind this is from a purely technical standpoint.

The 450D has some cheap, good lenses on there, while the D200 has expensive lenses I think. I may go for the 450D, but it has been pushed back till after Christmas because of other money expenditure which was MUCH more important.
