Hello, im new here. I have been having issues with my alienware 17 since purchase and never got anywhere with dells terrible customer service. Its always ran what seemed to be very hot. Even after repasting it. Hot enough to make me keep my fingers off the left side (only while gaming on high settings). Anyway, i was playing a game tonight and i saw a small flash followed by smoke and the computer shut down instantly. I immediately unplugged it and opened it up to find what went wrong. I tracked it down to a short on the fan connector. So i unplugged it to see if the laptop will power on. It will not. As soon as i plug in the charger the charger shuts down as if it shorts out. I replaced the ac port, tested different chargers and used mine on other laptops so that shouldnt be the issue. A new fan is on its way as well. My main question is, will the fan not being plugged in or shorted out cause the computer to not turn on at all or has something else fried as well? Likely from to much heat? The cpu never over heats. It is only the gpu. I am not a tech guy but im generally good at figuring things out. I paid 2800 for this about 3 years ago and dont feel like fumbling around with it and messing something else up so im here hoping to find someone who knows their stuff. Any help would be appreciated.

Edit: i have also looked, and smelled, around everywhere else on this laptop. Ive almost completely disassembled it and nothing else looks out of the normal. The only issue i can see is with the little plug of the fan itself, not where it plugs in.

Edit: 09-16-16
Ive replaced the fan.no change. I ordered a new motherboard. What are the chances that the cpu went bad?

A bad fan can cause issues with turning on, but you should see a message about "fan error" and then it will go no further.

It may be a dead motherboard if a new fan did not fix things. About the heat, you can always see exactly how hot it gets with several utilities. I use HWMonitor but system vendors often have their own utilities also.
