I bought my Asus laptop a year ago and it has a single port for plugging in earbuds or speakers. I've tried to plug earbuds with mics attached in but my computer never picks it up. My only option is the built in microphone and I hate it. Is there a way around this or am I buying the wrong earbuds? I used to use a headset for gaming but since I bought this laptop with one port I can't use a headset. If you can recommend steps to take that would be nice. Thank you

That is because many new laptops have a single jack that does not work with microphones. I have come to believe that they just don't think people using laptops are going to want to use external microphones of any kind. Which of course is completely wrong.

Your only options, in this case, is to either get yourself an adapter that you can plug your current headset/mic combo into and then the other end be a USB. Which should work just fine. Or to get yourself a headset/mic combo that is for USB. The former may be cheaper, so I would look into that first.
