Denon AVR-X3300W - why do I need to have HDMI output to TV disconnected (or TV on) to play via non-HDMI inputs

I have a new Denon AVR-X3300W receiver with various HDMI inputs and a, a single HDMI cable connected to my TV.

No issue with the HDMI in/out side of it but one apparent 'requirement' is irritating me...

If I turn it on the receiver and start playing audio content via the 'network input' (e.g. if I use Spotify Connect) I get no sound. I discovered that to get sound I either need to take out the HDMI lead from the TV (I can then plug it straight back in and the sound continues) or turn the TV on. In other words the receiver is demanding the HDMI output end is 'there' regardless of the whether the input needs to display anything. Now, the receiver does display track info about the networked content on the TV if it's on, but surely it shouldn't be a necessity to have visual output of any kind when playing purely audio content?

Hello,

This is a question that I doubt will be answered here. I seem to be the one of the more knowledgeable people here with recent Denons however I haven't worked with spotify. But that doesn't mean we'll leave you hanging here, instead I'll direct you to a different website AVS Forums.

This is the specific thread regarding your receiver, I did a quick search but didn't see your particular issue so I'd suggest asking on it. Just so you know, sometimes posts do get missed here if there are dropped into the middle of a 10-15 post discussion. If you don't get a response (give them a day or even two...

If you don't get a response (give them a day or even two to respond though), just ask again and if you don't get an answer the second time, come back here and let me know. I think you need something like 10-20 posts before you can send PMs so I'll go onto the site and send a message for you.
